Chapter 13

It’s 10:45 when the last of the wedding guests have left the Roland Price Technology Center. I sent Keaton home to let Barley out. Mom and Dad had wanted to stay and help, but Dan sent them home, too. There was nothing more to do. He and I are going to compare notes, but I don’t think either one of us is any closer to solving the murder of Cowboy Donnie than we were when we discovered his body, judging from the downtrodden look on Dan’s face.

“Rosi, this is a mess. I have no idea what direction this investigation is going to take. Garfield Rosencran swears up and down that the taxidermy fox is not his. He claims he’s being framed—or that Gladys is being framed—for some disdain over her mere existence in Tucson Valley.” Dan holds his head in his hands.

“It’s true the ladies haven’t welcomed Gladys with open arms. Brenda admitted to having an argument with Cowboy Donnie about his sermons and service changes, but nothing much came from my questions. You can’t possibly think that any of them would kill the preacher to frame the golf ball diver with the killer bod—no pun intended—do you?”

“Of course not. I know those women as well as you. They might kill you having to listen to their exaggerated gossip, but no one in that group is going to take a knife to anyone’s throat.

“Speaking of the knife, did the crime scene techs give any takes on the murder weapon?”

“They called the knife cut common, like something you’d find in your kitchen, but they didn’t find the knife at the scene.”

“So not something only a taxidermist might have in his shop?”

“Exactly.”

“You know, sometimes the murderer really is the person right in front of you, evidence wise. It’s not always some big chase or unexpected reveal.”

“That might be true, but we need real evidence, not circumstantial evidence. A stuffed fox doesn’t prove a case. Still, I’m hoping for prints on the fox to come back with helpful information.”

“I agree. What I don’t understand, though, is why Cowboy Donnie? Why take out the preacher?”

“I have no idea. The man put me to sleep sometimes, but he was a decent human being. It seems kind of personal that someone a part of Tucson Valley’s community would meet such an unfortunate fate. He was supposed to officiate our wedding in a couple of weeks. What are we going to do now? Just last week we were in his office for premarital counseling. He had us take a relationship test.”

“Oof. That sounds terrifying.”

“Not at all. The results showed that my girl and I are nearly a perfect match. There is no other woman in this world better suited to me than Caliope.”

I have to keep my enthusiastic agreement in check because I still can’t believe that Dan hooked someone as smart and beautiful as my schoolteacher friend. He’s come a long way from the obvious flirt he was when I first arrived in Tucson.
